19.05.2017 - Wall#E – winner of INNOspace Masters 2017

On Wednesday 17th May 2017, the INNOspace Masters programme "Space 4.0" of the German Aerospace Center (DLR) has awarded its winner in Berlin for the second time. 140 participants from companies, start-ups, universities and research institutions from ten European countries have submitted their pioneering ideas for space. The project Wall#E, based on a consortium of Institute for Space Systems at Technical University of Braunschweig, INVENT and iPAT, was awarded as overall winner of the programme. The idea involves integrating energy storage functions into the support structures of spacecraft. Wall#E utilizes fibre-reinforced structures infiltrated with innovative solid-state battery materials, which will significantly reduce the mass and volume of satellites. Consequently, also the launch costs for missions are reduced. This concept may be further adapted to launch systems, space stations, and ground-based e-mobility applications.
